Course Maintenance Information
"Letter from the Rough"
from Kurt Hellenga, GCSAA, Lakeview Superintendent
Lakeview's Turf Management Department will be conducting a core aerification to all golf greens March 28-31. We will be using a smaller coring tine than usual, which will in turn reduce the heal time required and the amount of sand needed to fill in the holes. We are anticipating about a 2-week heal time depending on weather and temperatures. We feel that conducting this year's aerification earlier than normal will benefit us by getting this important process out of the way on a faster pace so golfers can enjoy the course sooner.
I am sure that everyone knows why aerification is important, but for those who are new to the process and want to know why it is important, a list of the benefits is below:
The Primary objectives to aerification and topdressing include:
• Smooth surface, finer textured turf, with tighter, more upright growth.
• Uniformed and consistent putting surfaces.
• Thatch and compaction control for better shot holding characteristics.
• Modification of the surface layer of soil.
• Control of unwanted grain and leafiness.
• This process also helps with absorbing the rainfall or irrigation water during dry conditions.
The golf course will still be open during the process. We are going to complete one 9-holes a day so as the golf course will still be available for play.
