Victory for Vets

VIRGINIA WOUNDED WARRIORS PROGRAM

Virginia has nearly a million veterans, and an estimated 20% of those veterans are afflicted with mental health problems or traumatic brain injuries. In particular, a significant number of veterans returning from Iraq or Afghanistan report symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), debilitating depression, or actual combat-related brain injury.

WWThese alarming statistics translate to a serious public health concern in Virginia where approximately 200,000 veterans and their families need medical and social assistance, including mental health and rehabilitative care.  Consequently, on July 1, 2008, Former Governor Kaine and the General Assembly put into place the Virginia Wounded Warriors Program (VWWP) to assist veterans and their families with stress-related and traumatic brain injuries. The VWWP is providing timely assessment and treatment for our veterans, and provides individual and family support services to those afflicted through four regional offices, public and private health care linkages, and local community care organizations.

Lakeview Golf Club was the first donor organization in Virginia to support this program with its September 13, 2008 inaugural "Victory for Vets” tournament. The club held a second benefit tournament in 2009, and we continue to support the VWWP each year.  The club and its generous sponsors, members, and volunteers have raised in excess of $60,000 during the first two tournaments. Each year, Lakeview dedicates the entire golf course and all tournament proceeds to the Wounded Warriors Program.

All sponsored contributions, donations, and all tournament revenue will go directly to the VWWP, and all proceeds go directly to programs assisting veterans! None of the funds raised can be used for administration or be reallocated to any other program. No program money can revert to the General Fund or be utilized other than for direct veteran services.

Lakeview will host veterans from conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the club is joined in its efforts by service organizations, including the VFW, DAV, AmVets, the American Legion, and others statewide. The tournament program is fully supported by the Virginia Department of Veterans Affairs, and by cooperation from many service providers including the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center, Brain Injury Recovery Program, Crossroads to Brain Injury Recovery Program, and Salem VA Medical Facility.

It is a fun day with tournament events, prizes, and a catered luncheon. Those persons interested in participating as players or sponsors can register or obtain information by calling the Lakeview clubhouse at 434-8937 or by contacting Dave or Judy Holt at 433-3025.  Entry blank is included as a part of the printable brochure linked above.
